About Round Dancing

Round dancing is a wonderful exercise for both mind and body.  It’s also known as Cued Ballroom.  In traditional ballroom dancing, the man creates his own choreography by leading a woman through a set of figures he determines.

In round dancing, routines are pre-choreographed.  Round dancing includes various rhythms such as Waltz, Foxtrot, Cha Cha, Rumba, West Coast Swing, Jive, Bolero and others.  Each rhythm has phases (levels), based on difficulty of the figures within the phase. Once dancers learn the figures in a specific rhythm / phase, they are able to dance to most routines in that rhythm / phase.

In round dancing, all the couples dance the same routine in a circle.  A cuer plays music and cues (prompts) the man to lead the woman through the figure(s) just before the figure fits into the music.  The cuer is speaking to the man so the woman may have a completely different way to execute the same figure and is often opposite of the man.

The mental exercise is hearing the figure then processing it through the brain and down to the feet all within a second or two.  Round dancing is a great way to enjoy the company of a dance partner and other dancers, to learn something new and to get mental and physical exercise.
